![]() ![]() Steve Chappell, author of the 1983 book, A Timber Framer’s Workshop: Joinery, Design & Construction of Traditional Timber Frames, encapsulated the intimacy of timber frame design. ![]() We owe a huge thanks to those who revived timber frame building methods during this time-those who catalyzed something once thought obsolete. It wasn’t until the 1970s when people began looking into post-and-beam construction again. People opted instead for homes that were easy and affordable to construct, resulting in a hyperbolic sense of uniformity. Eventually the industrial revolution, coupled with a post-war economy, brought demand for these structures down significantly, thereby giving rise to the American suburb. Techniques were passed down orally through working relationships between apprentices and masters. ” Walt H.Timber frame construction methods have been around since the neolithic period. I feel honored & lucky to have been able to share that space for a small period of time. The place you have created is extremely special & is an excellent, prime example of a HOME, not just a house. I never had an experience anything like the time spent with you, Blaine & Fred, & the entire group of other students. You three were the teachers, but never from a point of all knowing, dictating, only from a point of genuine joy at opening doors. You & Blaine & Fred presented information ( a lot of it) plainly & clearly, but also made time to talk about mistakes, side tracks & dead ends, & how important all of that is to learning such a nuanced skill. & it is only now that I can see the whole breadth of what we learned, but most importantly how we were taught. Lots of thought and preparation! ” Margaret W. Ziggy and April were wonderful organizers and hosts. “Loved learning things I never knew before, working with other folks, accomplishing things together that we could not do alone, seeing something big come together before our eyes. April was an amazing hostess and the food! Wow! Thank you for sharing your wisdom. It created a working knowledge for us to utilize immediately. I loved the way you taught us about the building and then allowed us to sort out problem solving for ourselves with patience. I learned a lot this week and have been further shaped by the space you provided. At the risk of this turning into a novel, I’ll just say that you have something special there and I hope to come back and experience more of it. Not in a “I have to say this because she fed me” way, but really, truly amazing. It was such a model for joy and what could be if we took some time to slow down and see it all. The workshop was incredibly informative but the experiences and the atmosphere were truly a gift. The workshop brought together a great group of folks with diverse skills and we enjoyed the wholesome food, beautiful setting, and rigorous building schedule. We learned the basic skills for layout, as well as cutting the joinery using everything from antique hand tools and to modern electric tools. “The timberframe workshop at Year of Mud offered everything I needed to wet my feet and gain the confidence to tackle a timberframe project on my own.
